Open innovation and artificial intelligence

ai open innovation

Open Innovation in the Age of AI paper by Marcus Holgersson, Linus Dahlander, Henry Chesbrough, and Marcel L. A. M. Bogers is a great summary of how artificial intelligence can impact open innovation. I will add two important points to the paper:

Open innovation is a relationship

Open innovation is used differently in different cultures. For example, English open innovation Wikipedia page is very technical while French uses words like principles, ethics, and solidarity. In some industries and cultures open innovation is understood as a new way to relate to clients, customers, end-users; it is an ultimate human-to-human collaborative relationship; open innovation process and participants are more important than the resulting innovation. While AI can liberate open innovation from boring repetitive tasks, I would like that collaborative relationship aspect of open innovation – openness and trust – is more emphasized. If the openness part is not maintained, open innovation will be diminished.

Open innovation for artificial intelligence

The most important aspect of open innovation and AI relationship is not how AI changes open innovation, but how open innovation changes AI. AI is a form of centralization – it is an expensive and complex technology which is extremely hard to edit by users – and centralization is always risky. While it will solve many problems, it also requires a counterpart – something that destresses its extreme centralization and reduces risk – an open approach. If every company in the world uses the same AI then we will reduce innovation and uniqueness. Finally, AI needs open innovation, open data, and other forms of input to grow in the future. AI will need to adopt open innovation in order to become a truly liberating and universal technology. I would like to see how this side of AI and open innovation relationship would work. How can we get AI makers to be more open?

Open innovation is not only about innovation but also about being open. AI is not something that changes us, it is also something that we change. Both open innovation and AI are amazing tools which will build our future, but they need to be used at full capacity – open innovation and AI must be truly open and connected.

An important step is to make open innovation more popular globally. AI makers have an enormous marketing machinery, while open innovation has a much smaller global influence. For example, there are no big open innovation solution providers, there are no mass-use products. To solve this we made our OPEN OS open innovation software as an easy affordable global solution.

PS AI would be of great help in writing opportunities (challenges) and the guiding innovators through the co-innovation process.
