There are more than 1 billion knowledge workers who are also highly influential on the work of the other 7+ billion people. Generative AI, including LLMs, will surely automate large parts of knowledge work. All these knowledge workers own specific knowledge which can not be replaced by generic machine learning. They require hybrid AI which combines generative AI driven by machine learning but focused by expert systems curated by humans.
This is very evident in SMEs and other smaller organizations which are responsible for a large part of global innovation. Their adoption of generative AI depends on how efficiently they merge it with their own expert knowledge. This kind of knowledge is not formalized in datasets, is informal, and sometimes implicit. For SME adoption of AI to work it must bridge the gap between generic AI and their own specific expertise with a minimal and highly efficient investment in hybrid AI.

In our tests we have successfully used OPEN OS as a method to engage users in improving expert system in hybrid AI. This means that ChatGPT can ask a user how to improve its own rules, it can then based on the answer create an innovation which user approves. This innovation is seen by an OPEN OS manager who can easily implement it in ChatGPT settings in OPEN OS.
This allows any SMEs or any smaller organization to use a community of employees, partners, external experts, to quickly and easily build a sophisticated, unique, and proprietary expert system as part of their hybrid AI. In such case open innovation, through OPEN OS, is a crucial factor in AI adoption because it provides a very efficient and low cost method in building a uniquely valuable AI solution. If open innovation is used to build expert systems which localize and specialize generative AI by building hybrid AI solutions, most organizations will be able to adopt AI in a competitive and valuable way for them and their customers.
