In 2019 we discovered the power of open innovation. It made sense to apply openness into innovation, marketing, sales, and other areas. If it worked so well for open source and Wikipedia, it must also benefit companies.
In 2020 we launched openinnovation.me – a shared open innovation platform. We innovated open innovation by adopting the Twitter microblogging approach. It allowed anyone to quickly share ideas and news without much formality. Openinnovation.me became open to a much wider audience – factory workers, bakers, end-users – by shortening both opportunities and innovations and making them less formal. The projects we started years ago are still running, engaging thousands of innovators in product innovation for companies like Fiam.
In 2023, we made OPEN OS, a version of openinnovation.me which can be installed on any client location and fully customized. We recognized a need among clients to have their own branded experience, where they can attract innovators and integrate it with their systems. In some cases clients chose OPEN OS as their main websites CMS, making open innovation their main strategy, instead of a content marketing or e-commerce.
Open innovation mostly used text-based forms. We wanted to break away from them and started experimenting with browser-based interactive 3D solutions. We realized that we can create online 3D environments where innovators can suggest new ideas, designs, and innovations. This was a great approach for physical products, architecture, and other space-intensive projects. In 2025, we launched OPEN OS 3D.
And by 2026, we have spent a substantial amount of time researching how AI can be used for open innovation. We made teambuilt.ai – it is not only an application of LLMs that replaces forms with an AI chat, but it combines open innovation and LLMs into a complete company solution. This was the holy grail of our open innovation journey – open innovation is not anymore a side gig, but a useful engine that powers every aspect of the company.
